'Shroom Condos

Simi, Ca

* 1-4-06 *

Walking back from Jon's school today we saw a cool dude
tree with lots of bumps all over it & as we rounded to
the other side of the tree, I noticed a HUGE growth of
'shrooms on it... I mean, there was an enormous amount
of these guys growing... most looked like these pictured
here, altho a few were more yellow with very large tops
on them. Very cool to photograph, but I dunno how good
it was for the poor tree! Anyways, this one was done on
the regular macro setting. I couldn't really get close
enough to use the super macro; maybe on another trip...

Pleurotus columbina, ostreatus, pulmonaris etc. Pleurotus are excellent edible mushrooms. They are mainly used to serve with veal meat because of there fine tatse.
There aditional names are due to the colour. The pigeon coloured, the oyster, the lung (yellowish) and so on. They are cleaning agents in forests and they destroy weak trees. They also grow on staraw and this substrate is mainly used to cultivate them. But, you can also grow them in your garden on birch wood.
They "eat" the cellulose out of the wood and all that remains is white dust when they have finnishe dwith it. In ancient time they where used for this job by paper manufactures. Today, cellulose is removed chemically.
So, before your tree is dead, just get them and enjoy the meal..
They have a non edible companion that looks similar, but he is sticky on the top and where the stemm comes out of the wood he is felty, just leke velvet and this part is dark grey. Also he is only dirty grey with yellowish spots.
In forests one runs sometimes when you see them from far and when you come closer you see that it was the non edible brother only.

They do look like Oyster mushrooms but...as Coleen said...check them first before eating. However they do look like you could play a tune on them :>)

Very lovely. These look like "oyster mushrooms", though I would not eat them without consulting with someone who knows.
