This was our third visit to Buckskin Gulch - Steve and I first visited in 2006 when we backpacked from Wire Pass to the White House Trailhead. I don't think I'll ever get tired of hiking in Buckskin Gulch - it's an amazing place. Located in the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliffs Wilderness area, it's the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwest. It has twelve miles of narrows, rarely wider than 10 feet. For this trip we hiked 1.7 miles in through Wire Pass to the confluence with Buckskin Gulch, and from there walked maybe a mile in Buckskin before turning around. There was one obstacle in Wire Pass - about a ten foot drop that was awkward to down climb and get back up - we opted to do the hike around (when I say "we", I basically mean I wanted to do the hike around). I love how small I feel in this canyon - looking up at the soaring canyon walls, admiring the beautiful patterns of erosion and the glow of reflected light peeking out beyond a bend. Can't wait until we visit again.
