The Snow Lake trek in Karakoram is surely one of the most amazing mountain journeys in the world. Following two glaciers, Biafo and Hispar, with Hispar La (pass; 5150 m) between them, this links the Baltistan and Hunza regions of northern Pakistan. The "Snow Lake" is a large glacial basin at the confluence of a number of glaciers, at the foot of the Hispar La, on the Biafo side.
The trek (usually) starts from Askole, as does the classic Baltoro/K2 base camp. Already one the first trekking day the two routes diverge, the Snow Lake trek turning sharply left to north-west, entering the Biafo glacier. Despite the proximity of the popular Baltoro trek, the Snow Lake trek is much wilder, feels very remote and exploratory - finding the best way through the glacier is quite a challenge.
