Blue morpho butterfly.

There are many butterflies, and these are amongst the prettiest. The outside of their wings are much more subdued and camouflaged, so it is very hard to find one that has its wings open to show colour. Butterflies almost never sit with their wings open (as opposed to moths, which always do).

Ecuador breeds butterflies for export -- I'm guessing that Montréal might be one of the destinations since the Insectarium here does "Papillons-en-liberté/Butterflies-fly-free" every winter, where you can walk around in one of the greenhouses with many butterflies flitting around.

A gorgeous capture of this lovely butterfly! By the looks of your shutter speed, this butterfly was very still! BV+++
