Kirk In The Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan

Kirk in the Hills is a beautiful Presbyterian church located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan that includes the Tower of the Apostles. The tower houses the world's largest carillon in the number of bells contained, which was installed in 1960. The 77-bells range from a 6'10" 6-ton Bourdon to the smallest at 6" 14-pounds. The Church is of gothic design and is patterned after the once-famous Melrose Abbey in Scotland that was built in the 13th century. The church was completed in 1958.

The original images in this gallery were taken in May, 2006 and are supplemented with newer images taken three years later.

Greetings folks:

I am so happy to read the wonderful and warm comments about the Kirk. I spent many weekends
in the Kirk before it was a church. My grandfather was Col. Edwin George, the benefactor of the Kirk. It was still his house when I slept there. What a wonderful transformation. Bless everyone.

Please visit my Kirk history web site at www.kirkinthehills.com. I have placed the book I am writing about my early childhood growing up at the Kirk. The book at this point is pretty much about my family history, but I want to make some chapters more general and I want to include ancedotes and stories from others who are willing to submit them.

If anyone has has photos of those early years I will put them in the manuscript and give credit in the text to the person/family that allowed me to include the photos. For instance, the big fire occurred after I moved from the Kirk grounds, I would very much like newspaper clippings and photos to include in the Chapter on Kirk History. which only goes to 1954.

I am also interested in news clippings and photos of the great alligate hunt that was caused by Danny Singleton telling a new paper report that he saw an aligation in Island lake.

I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE KIRK FOR 30 YEARS AND WHILE I LIVE IN PALM BEACH, FLORIDA I MISS THE KIRK EVERY DAY ESPECIALLY ON SUNDAYS. I WILL BE IN MICHIGAN THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 17, AND WILL ATTEND SERVICES SUNDAY OCTOBER 18, 2009 AN EVENT I AM GREATLY LOOKING FORWARD TO. My mother was one of the founders of the Kirk. After the fire in mid 50's and meeting in the auditorium at Bloomfield Hills High across the street...the rebuilding program was extensive and intense thanks to Dr Dewindt...I love the Kirk and as a son of a founder, the church is a 'beacon' in my life and we will be back 'home' for the Dream Cruise in August...thanks for the great photos Jay...

The photos are exquisite and bring back wonderful memories of my childhood at the Kirk. My heart will always be there. The main altar in the Sanctuary was given in memory of my beloved Father, John Calvin Palmer. He was an Elder and made himself and his resources available to Dr. DeWindt as needed.
