Scientific name: Caligo memnon
Owl butterflies are native to Central and South America. Their name is derived from the presence of large
eysepots on their wings, which are used to scare away or fool predators.
Thanks to my photographer buddy Al Hart, who pointed out this guy or gal to me as we walked around
the Butterfly Garden.
