A final poochpic from our trip to Durham, friends. I thought these were real people until I realised they smelled funny!
Dad: We asked one of the locals about this sculpture, which lies between the shopping centre & the car park. She told us that it
represents a small group of early medieval monks who were driven away from the island of Lindisfarne by Viking raiders and arrived in
Durham to found a new home, carrying the 'relics' (bones?) of St Cuthbert, whose shrine can still be found in Durham Cathedral.
Legend has it the monks followed a couple of dairy maids who were looking for a stray 'dun cow' up a hill, and decided to found
their new monastery at the top. (there is still a street near the cathedral called 'Dun Cow Lane'!)
