Gallery Seventy Three: Expressive treasures from the underpass.

The underpass, usually a set of steps on each side of a large urban intersection connected by an underground pedestrian tunnel, can offer a remarkable setting for expressive travel photographs. They are usually flooded with striking backlight at both ends during daylight hours, which makes an excellent abstracting medium. They are often filled with people hurrying, gesturing, and carrying things. Their faces may reflect expectations or frustration. In some cities, vendors are permitted to sell goods on either end. Street performers will sometimes entertain within the tunnels. And in very special cases, they can become art galleries. And when an underpass is virtually empty, it can become a lonely world unto itself.

On my recent trip to Istanbul, Kiev, and Bucharest, I shot extensively within a number of underpasses. The ten images in this gallery offer examples of the visual treasures that await in underpasses and on the steps that flank them. I hope to add additional images to this gallery from underpasses I may visit in the future.

I present this gallery, as usual, in "blog" style. A large thumbnail is displayed for each image, along with a caption explaining how I intended to express my ideas. If you click on the large thumbnail, you can see it in its full size, as well as leave comments and read the comments of others. I hope you will be able to participate in the dialogue. I welcome your comments, suggestions, ideas, and questions, and will be delighted to respond.
