Park bench, Naha, Okinawa, Japan, 2006

This man has carefully lined a stone bench in Naha’s Matsuyama Park with cardboard, removed his shoes, and placed a bottle beneath his head. He sleeps soundly. His posture, the precise care he as brought to his comforts, the use of a hard bottle as a pillow, and the formal precision of the picture’s composition are all incongruous. The warm morning light adds an incongruous setting for such sadness. In fact, my initial thought upon seeing this man for the first time was that he had died and his body was laid out for public viewing. In short, this image presents what appears to be homelessness as ceremony – certainly an incongruous premise.

Thanks, Rodney, for pointing out the symbolic importance of the long shadows here. They do make it seem as if he has been at sleep here for an eternity. And yes, I do see the similarity between the tranquillity of this scene and in your own image.

For me the incongruity is tranquil rest obtained from laying on hard surfaces (the stone bench, the glass bottle pillow). Even his shoes are uniformly placed under the bench. His body language almost shows a meditative state, which is much more tranquil than typical sleep. He is at peace with the universe, and live goes on. It reminds me a great deal of my photo:http://www.pbase.com/thewizardrod/image/28308926

Additionally, the shadows add to the overall feel of the photo and incongruity. The shadows are long, giving me a sense he has been laying there for quite some time, and time marched on, even if he remained the same.

Thanks, Jeff for this observation. It is indeed a blend of the horizontal and vertical. The bricks do draw the eye from front to back to his shoes and then up to him, while the bench and the man spread the image from the side to side.

Thanks, Christine, for this comment. You are right -- this is very unusual sleeping. Thanks for pointing out the umbrella as well. He obviously has no worries about being robbed. And yes, I kept my distance on this shot. I did want to wake him. I used a long telephoto lens.

What surprised me at first was how neatly this man is placed on the bench to sleep: very straight (I don’t know many people who sleep like that), feet and arms crossed. The use of the plastic bottle as pillow is interesting and shows some creativity. I wondered if he would not be scared to have his shoes and his umbrella stolen while he sleeps. Also, you seem to have kept a certain distance from him to take his picture, as to not disturb his sleep.
