Out to dry, The Dhobi Ghat, Bombay, India, 2016

I made a number of images using a wideangle lens to embrace the entire operation. However my telephoto lens allowed me to optically move much closer, including less, but saying more. In this shot, only a very small part of the vast laundry is visible. Yet we are able to come close enough to easily spot the men who work in the lower part of this image, and we can still see the hundreds of individual garments hanging on the lines. With so many clothes being washed and dried every day, one wonders how so many customers manage not to wind up with another persons pants in their laundry. Apparently the Ghat keeps excellent track of “who may belong to what” here. Clothes are marked in code, done in permanent ink on small scraps of cotton tied to the garment.

Good question, Rose. My guess would be that they simply shut down during heavy rains and wait for the sun to shine once again.

Clothes that commute! Amazing. How do they get the clothes dry during the monsoon season?

Thanks, Tim and Iris. I owe these laundry (as well as the lunchbox) shots to Liz. She was the one who hired a driver and guide and took us to see them and allowed me to shoot these photographs. They will always remind me of the off-beat way she saw the world. This would be the last trip she would make before she died on February 6, only a few days after you had made these comments.

I love the color in the image. For me, it is the color of humanity, beautiful in its diversity.

I did not know about the Dhobi Ghat. Your two images and your commentary have introduced me to this fascinating operation that obviously dates back hundreds a years in Bombay, with seemingly few changes. Given the sheer volume of laundry handled every day, it is amazing that this labor intensive industry, with its difficult working conditions, operates in such an organized and efficient way.
