Marks of time, Bombay, India, 2016

This grand old home, built when India was a British colony, stands just around corner from the house that Gandhi occupied when he lived in Bombay. I express its character by moving in on the faded colors and decaying decorations. The color and details are abstracted in the dappled shadows, leaving us with only a hint of its former beauty.

Thanks, Graeme, for your kind comment. The worn facades of old Bombay invariably tell the story of India's experience as a 19th and early 20th century British colony. The ornamentation was elegant, yet the marks of time have left their imprint on this scene as well.

This is the Bombay of The Raj, the British rule. It reflects not only age, but also a gentility enjoyed by the rulers, but not by the ruled.

This image is a shock after the polished modernity of the previous cities.
