Desert surprise, Gold Canyon, Arizona, 2013

I made this image just as the setting sun grazed the bright violet blooms of a desert cactus. The sun also defines the sharp spines exploding around them. The luminous blossoms and their surrounding spines stand in sharp contrast to the already shaded masses of yellow wildflowers that fill a softly focused background. By slightly darkening the edges of the image in post-processing, I further stress the incongruity of this contrast in colors, telling an emphatic story of nature itself at work.

Thanks, Mike. I am honored to welcome you to my galleries. We tend to take subject matter such as this for granted out here in Arizona. However mundane it seem be to locals, it becomes something else in evening light and certainly worthy of photographic interpretation.

Thanks, Rose and Carol, for your comments. The blossoms do indeed work as a triangle of color within a triangle of cacti. The lovely violet blooms contrast to the both the dangerous spines and the virtually monochromatic plant itself. The contrasts continue as sharp needle play against the softly focused bed of yellow wildflowers in the background. Much depends here upon the angle of view, the backlight, the focal length, and the composition.

Cactus flowers seem not to be found all that often, and with the backlighting you use here further enhancing the brilliant color contrasting with the grayish green hues, it just adds to their special-ness. I like that you use three blooms in this composition.

I like the softly focused background; for me, it accentuates the sharpness of the cactus spines in the foreground. The lighting and colors are glorious v

Thanks, Ika, for your kind comment. This was one of those pictures that "Just happened. We had passed by these same blossoms earlier that afternoon, and never even noticed them because the afternoon light did not emphasize the color as it did later, at sunset.
