Booby call, Elizabeth Bay, Isabela Island, The Galapagos, Ecuador, 2012

This Blue Footed Booby was whistling as he ducked his head, raised his bill, and thrust his wings overhead as an exclamation point. It was probably engaging in a mating ritual. I liked the way the thrusting wings, tail, head, bill, and the bizarre pair of blue feet work together here to create an incongruous portrait of one of the world's most unique sea birds.

Blue Footed Boobies can breed at any time of the year -- it simply a matter of the food supply, which in turn is affected by the winds and the currents. And yes, these birds are expressive and insistent. Mating is never a subtle matter here.

It must have been mating season when you were there because these birds seem very single minded and expressive...and insistent!

That is what this image is all about -- it is more than a picture of just another booby standing on a rock. It is an expression of energy making it into a incongruous portrait.

Great energy here.
