A study in contrasts, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

I backlight this image, silhouetting a small group of beachgoers against the reflection of the sun on the Pacific Ocean. The sun, meanwhile, hangs above the cloudbank, which acts as filter. It faintly feathers the rays of the sun through the scene. The image becomes a study in contrast in both light and scale.

Once again, I center my subjects, along with the reflection in the water and the big hole in the center of that cloud overhead. Center placement is often formal placement, and the grandeur of the moment calls for such formality.

Nice... only by silhouetting against the bright area of ocean have you been able to maintain the visual separation of the men and the water... again, centering the subjects creates a beautifully balanced and calm composition...
