Smoke, Toronto, Canada, 2009

A smoker tapping ash from a cigarette outside of an office building is not in itself expressive subject matter. Rather, it is up to how we can photograph it to make it expressive. In this case, the smoker chose to stand within a pool of early morning light, casting a shadow on the marble wall behind her. She clutches a bottle of water in one hand, while using the other to tap the ash from her extended cigarette. A puff of smoke circles the fingers, while her highlighted expression remains passive. Using spot-metering mode, I expose on the sun-splashed wall, allowing the rest of the image to darken. The shadows embrace a row of softly focused red flowers at the base of the image, reminding us that smoking often casts a shadow on the quality of life itself.

I am sure she feels isolated and perhaps even a bit ashamed -- smoking is an addiction, and not everyone is able to stop, even if they wanted to do so. The light here is everything -- the fact that she is smoking adds context, but the mood and meaning comes through the interplay of light and shadow. Thanks, Iris.

Your interplay of light and shadow are (as always) wonderful in this image. However, I am also drawn to the sadness of the lone smoker. As more and more smokers are driven outside of public buildings, the sight of the solitary smoker is becoming a familiar one. It makes me wonder how she feels.

Thanks, Rusty, for your comment. I am gradually getting used to the G1 and its lenses. It was the light that drew me to this image -- the fact that she was smoking was incidental in my choice of subject, yet it becomes the point of the image as the light and shadow defines the smoke. I am always looking for interplay in light and shadowed areas, which works perfectly for me here.

even though it garners no comments, this photo seems to me to be pretty much what it's all about. it captures a quiet, real human moment of reflection, never easy to capture or time given the difficulties of handling or mastering a camera. I think you've learned your new camera and lens. this photo also seems to me a tour de force of seeing and composing with beautiful light, carefully exposed. I like particularly the little touch of how the light catches the cigarette smoke, and how it stands out against the dark background, which hardly ever happens in anyone else's photos, not that photography is a competitive sport. the light fall on the face is of course quite beautiful, the little gesture of the arm, the little dappled diagonal...
