Cleaning up, Gloucester, Massachusetts, 2009

This man, who works in a seafood plant, takes great care to make sure the floors are spotless. Sanitation is a high priority in such places, and we can sense the diligence and care he brings to the task. The blue plastic gloves add context for such a job, while my close-up vantage point stresses character through the detail in his face.

I felt the tension as well here, Chris. The work is very demanding. The room must be more than just clean. It must be spotless. There is a lot riding on it. I felt the tension in his look as I framed the shot. It is still there.

I like the tension in his expression you caught here Phil.
It says so much!

I think cleaning up is only part of his job -- he seemed to also be doing a lot of other things while I was there as well. But you are right, Tim. It is easy to focus on the primary players and ignore the support team. But unless jobs such as this one are done well, this business could not survive. Cleanliness in a food processing plant is essential.

So often we ignore those anonymous workers who clean, weed, and care in the background.
