Dappled morning light warms the façade of this 19th century brownstone in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood. The oval windows give it a pair of eyes to look back at us, while the center window is transformed by shadows into an echo of religious faith.

Thanks, Tim. The layering created by the leaves and their shadows does indeed express the passage of time. The seasons come and go, carrying the leaves along with them. And shadows are transitory, changing as the sun rises and falls. Both the season and the sun represent the passage of time, and that is where the age and history come in.
