Risk, New York City, New York, 2009

A woman braves turning traffic to thread her way across a busy intersection in a heavy rain and against the light. She holds her umbrella of front of her as a shield. I wondered if she saw what was swirling around her at this moment? This image asks just such a question. Drivers and pedestrians seem to engage in a delicate dance of avoidance at the height of a rainstorm.

Yes, Tim -- she is the quintessential New Yorker, defying logic and the law of averages as she surges through this intersection. After studying this image more closely, however, I must apologize to her. She is not jaywalking here. She may have a green light. She is crossing Lexington Avenue at 34th Street, and all of those cars seem to be turning right onto Lexington on the red, directly into her path. She must, however, thread her way through these turning cars. She may have the right of way, but under these circumstances, the risk seems substantial.

This seems to me to be a metaphor for New York - plunge on in spite of difficulties - Also of note is the red hand telling the pedestrian to stop - which she doesn't do.
