Faded advertisement, Austin, Texas, 2009

I found a split personality within this old sign advertising chewing gum. The right side of the sign has faded away into the brickwork, while the left side, albeit soiled, retains much of its original presence. I thought this split metaphorically echoes the fatal flaw in chewing gum itself – its flavor always fades away, too fast and too soon.

Glad you see more here than I did, Carol. It is always rewarding to make a photograph that can be seen in many different ways. The more abstract an image becomes --and this image is an abstraction -- the more room we leave for the imaginations of our viewers to enter the image and make it their own. Thanks.

Actually I see the pack of gum kind of being translucent a bit. The paint on the edge of the gumpack near the center is brighter and suggests to me a second wall that is in front of the gum wall, maybe a doorway that we are looking through to the gum. An optical illusion that suggests transparency to me. And you're right.... chewing gum flavor still to this day fades all to soon.
