Graffiti, The Bowery, New York City, New York, 2009

The fire escape and windows of this tenement building become almost invisible in this image – the vivid colors and bold designs of the graffiti energize the structure as it expresses the culture of the neighborhood and creates a layer of folk art upon the architecture of another era. By underexposing the image, I deepen the colors and make the building recede even further into the background.

It is always a challenge to interpret the work of other artists with my camera, Tim. In this case, I tried to express the beauty of an art form that overwhelms the fire escapes and tenement upon which it appears. And I do it through frame and underexposure.

Graffiti artist wish to make an impression - how apt that their combined work becomes, through your art, impressionistic. I particularly notice the skull and ghost in the upper right hand window.
