Determined, Tozeur, Tunisia, 2008

The salesman portrayed earlier in this gallery ( http://www.pbase.com/image/106453100 ) spots his quarry and springs into action. He seems the essence of determination, -- jaw set, eyes narrowed, hand in motion, feet slipping softly forward. His target, a tourist in shorts, is following the most important rule for those who wish to avoid a sales pitch. He looks straight ahead, never making eye contact. He has already been forced to walk in the street – the sidewalk itself is blocked. The determined salesman appears willing to do all he can to stop this tourist in full stride, short of grabbing him. I’ve stopped them both forever here, even as they appear to be on a collision course. (You can guess how it came out.)

You are right -- this tourist never blinked or glanced. He just get on plowing ahead. It is like a ritual dance -- the salesman has got to try, or he loses his job. The tourist, on the other hand, does not have to play the game if he has better things to do.

They both look pretty determined. Such is the nature of their relationship, a classic example of approach-avoidance! The more aggressive the approach, the more determined the avoidance. It's a game between buyer and seller. In this case, I don't think a sale was made!
