2005-03-16: Tillandsia caput-medusae

This species usually flowers reliably every winter,
but this year only one shoot is ready to flower.
In a couple more weeks the bracts will turn hot pink
and skinny tubular purple flowers will peek out.
Like T. paucifolia, caput-medusae is a myrmecophyte:
ants colonize the swollen leaf bases and protect the plant.

An amazing looking plant. I thought it was a seed pod from the thumbnail...
