One of our most familiar and showy wildflowers.

Blooming time: March-early July
Occurs: mountains, piedmont and coastal plain
Habitat: forests, glades, wood edges, and calcareous rock outcrops
especially on calcareous or mafic substrates
Common (rare in coastal plain where it's restricted to coquina limestone outcrops).
