Memorial Day

I'm very patriotic. This is our Vietnam Veteran's Memorial. It was the war of my generation. The Walk of Honor contains 280 stainless steel bollards, one for each of the 280 men killed or missing in Vietnam from our region. I knew 2 of these fine young men. Both died before reaching their 21st birthday.

While I was there, a gentleman came along and paused at one of the bollards. He had gray hair - perhaps it was his son or brother? I thought about taking a picture of him - standing with his hands clasped in front of him and his head bowed. Just before he left, he saluted the bollard. I never could take the picture. I walked over to the bollard he was standing in front - it was a young man who is still MIA. It's still hits home after all these years... That's why I would make a terrible photojournalist.

I would have done the same thing you did. I maybe would have tried for a shot if I were a distance away with a telephoto lens so as not to be intrusive. A very well captured image, the location looks to be a very peaceful and beautiful setting.

Beautiful story. Your feelings are reflected here as well. Thank you to all the men and women who have died for our country and those that are still missing in action. Words will never be enough to show how thankful we are.
