Only one more day of the hunting season to go and I have still to even see
an animal that I could legally take on my license! Tomorrow, I hope to take
the snowshoes with me and go back to an area east of the Valley (below
Beaver Lk) where I saw evidence of deer travelling downhill away from the
deep snow. I was out on Friday, but had to give up my plans to hunt in
certain locations ( West Kettle and beyond Dee Lk.) because of deep snow,
too deep to go further with the truck and about knee deep, making for heavy
walking. I saw lots of tracks but no animals, none but a grouse or two, that is.
There are still many SS Hare and Lynx tracks, so perhaps I have a chance to
see another lynx this winter. One pleasure recently was to hear a Barred Owl
calling in the middle of an afternoon on Mt. Swite. It was in an area of
extensive coniferous forest. I didn't see it. Peterson calls it rare in BC
and the Golden book shows that we are on the western edge of its distribution.
On Friday, I put the chains on 3 times when I got stopped by deep snow. It
was deep enough to make me keep the wipers going to clear the windshield
from powdery snow blown up from the front bumper.
