Ichneumon perçant le bois / Megarhyssa macrurus / Rhysse cannelle

Ichneumon at work / Rhysse au travail

Laying.
The Ichneumone (Cinnamon Rhyss / Megarhyssa macrurus) is the natural predator of the Tremex.
The female inserts her ovipositor into the wood to lay her eggs in the tremex larva.

The noise that the larvae of the Tremex emit while chewing the wood, indicates their location
to the Ichneumone which it picks up by the end of its legs. She then pushes her ovipositor
through the bark into the larva.

A fantastic sequence, worthy of being a textbook illustration!
