This "Wasserturm" (water tower) was shut down and placed under heritage protection in 1985. Its old water equipment was scrapped, leaving only the water tank preserved. From a 56-metre height on the tower's viewing terrace, visitors have an unparalleled view of Lüneburg and its surrounds. In clear conditions, you can see as far as 40 km into the distance. All year round there are events held on the Wasserturm's six levels, including readings and concerts for young and old, while visitors can see temporary exhibitions. The tower (built 1907) was in operation until summer 1986. It was planned to demolish it, but this was cancelled because of too high costs, and later the tower was declared a cultural heritage monument. Starting 1997 it was renovated for the EXPO 2000, and today it is in use as Scenic viewpoint.
