The Staigue Stone Fort in Liss Upper, near Castlecove, is one of the best-preserved and most impressive Iron Age ring forts in Ireland. This dry-stacked stone fort is situated in a natural amphitheater on the Iveragh Peninsula and offers sweeping views over Kenmare Bay.
The fort is built entirely of local stone without the use of mortar. The walls are up to 4 meters thick at the base and taper towards the top to approximately 2 meters.
Although the exact dating is unclear, it is estimated that the fort was built between 300 and 400 AD as a defensive structure for a local leader. Other sources suggest an origin dating back to the first century BC.
