Section of Quesnel-Hixon road permanently closes
The ministry of transportation said it has been evaluating the viability of repairing the road for three years.
A 400-metre stretch of the Quesnel-Hixon road is being permanently closed after it was damaged in 2021's landslides a Ministry of Transportation news release said. The Cottonwood River Canyon Bridge is also being taken out of service. The section of the road has been closed with a turnaround spot put in place since the damage occured.
The release said that repairing the road would cost "hundreds of millions of dollars" to build new roads and repair the bridge.
"To ensure public safety and manage taxpayer funds wisely, a decision was made to permanently close this section of the road," the release said.
Routes including Ten Mile Lake road, Olson road, Morgan road and Plett road are alternative routes to Highway 97. The release said the ministry is considering additional safety improvements to the area.
