Robust Woodpecker (Campephilus robustus)
A juvenile male approximately 3 weeks out of the nest, with a white malar stripe like an adult female but with red spots in the white malar
and with black around the eye, the bill slightly darker than in an adult. (A juvenile female has a black forehead). The bill and tail were already
approaching adult size so it is not a recent fledgling. The breeding cycle of Robust Woodpecker is about 60 days, so assuming this
juvenile fledged around September 1, the egg laying must have started in the first days of July, which is rather early. The winter of 2023
was exceptionally mild which may have influenced the early nesting.
