I paid a visit to the H-1 "Spruce Goose" this past summer during our trip to Oregon. I have always been fascinated by this aircraft and the story behind its construction and of course its builder. Impressions of course were of its size, but also how smooth and clean it is even compared to a modern jet airliner. Completely lacking rivets and seams, and having relatively few external access panels. After all you could pretty much access everything from the inside. Inside, it felt like an extremely large mock-up, which of course are usually made of wood. As a museum aircraft, it also struck me as being very pure. Unlike most museum aircraft, it has not been restored to its original configuration by piecing it together from part from various sources and install "period" components. As it only flew once and only one was built, most of it has remained unchanged since the first flight aside from some post-flight work and modifications made for museum display. Images are 1800x1200.
