Eli Whitney is remembered for inventing the Cotton Gin which is credited with saving the South after the Civil war. But, he also demonstrated interchangeable parts to the Union Army and was awarded a large gun contract. He and his son built a reservoir which is still in use. That brought New Haven CT pressurized water pipes so hotels could have bathrooms on the upper floors. New Haven also had the first Fire Hydrants.
