Monument Valley Shadow Alignment

Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park

(TSE_1438)

Calculations indicated the Left Mitten shadow would be on top of the Right Mitten on March 30th for 2018, but I went down early to see if it might be cleared out in the day before and the day after the 30th, and along with it the Moon would be 98 or 99% full at that time.

This was the view on March 29th. Indeed the Moon was higher on this date, but it appears the shadow overlapped perfectly, so what would it look like on the 30th. There was some clouds low on the horizon at this time, but not enough to ruin the shadow completely. A clear horizon would give a slightly sharper shadow though.

The shadow can only occur twice a year to be best aligned, somewhere around March 26, and September 12, but will the Moon be full during these dates? Through 2022 there are a few of these, but then the next ones will be March 30, 2029, and then September 12, 2030.
