The barracks had no insulation from the harsh winter cold elements.
The wooden roofs often leaked, and the straw which was occasionally supplied as bedding was filthy and wet.
The prisoners wore the same gray/blue stripped clothes 24 hours a day.
They were considered lucky if they received shoes that fit their feet.
