Located on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, Liverpool became an important port in the 17th century. As trades developed, the wealth of Liverpool exceeded that of London in the 19th century. Post-war decline of the British Empire and the advent of shipping containers made its docks obsolete. Today, its economy is concentrated on the service and new media sectors. Culturally, Liverpool is best known as the home of the Beatles.
