Chora Church

Church of the Holy Savior in Chora is now a museum known as Kariye Müzesi in Turkish. "Chora" means "in the field" because this site stood outside of the original Constantine wall. The wall built by Theodosius II in 413-414 incorporated it into the city limit.
The current building was rebuilt in the 11th century by Maria Dukaina, the mother-in-law of Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. Decorating the walls and domes of its two section entrance lobby (exonarthex and esonarthex) are its famous mosaics from the early 14th century. The walls of other areas of the church was covered with frescos.
