The state of Penang includes Penang Island 檳榔嶼 and a hinterland across a channel connected by a 13.5 km long bridge. Its capital, George Town, is located on the northeast corner of Penang Island. It was found by the British in 1786 and named after George III. The inner core of George Town was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2008. |
