The port city of Malacca was the capital of the Sultanate of Malacca, a 15th century Malay kingdom ruling the entire Malay Peninsular, the southern tip of Thailand and most of the island of Sumatra. The ruling dynasty converted from Hindu to Islam.
At this time, Malacca was also the supply base of Admiral Zheng He 鄭和 (local spelling is Cheng Ho) who led the fleet of the Ming Empire into the Indian Ocean. Europeans arrived in the 16th century, starting with the Portuguese, who took the city from the Sultan in 1521 and built a fortress. The gate of A’Famosa is its relic. The Dutch and the British took over Malacca in succession. Under British rule, Malacca lost its importance as a port to Singapore. Today, tourism is its main economy. The area around St. Paul Hill was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2008. |
