On our way to Piazza San Marco
Our ferry docked at a pier on the Costello waterfront. To get to Piazza San Marco, we needed to walk across four bridges. The last one is the
Ponte della Paglia bridge.

Gondola on the Grand Canal
For €100, 6 of us hired a gondola near the Rialto Bridge for a 25-minute ride through the narrow waterways.
Once we got on the boat, we pulled our cameras out in anticipation of great shots.

On the Move
Our tour director Freddy kept us entertained as the bus drove from Venice to Siena.
06-JUN-2011
Up the Siena Hill
We were lucky that this cascade of six escalators near Porta Fontebranda was operating to take us from the bus stop up to the area near the Siena Cathedral. This saved us a lot of effort from walking uphill.

In front of the Siena Cathedral
In front of the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana (Museum of the Duomo), we listen to the story on how the Siena Cathedral was built while looking at its intricate facade.

The Last Rain

The morning rain has subsided and we put away our umbrellas as we walked by the statue of Dante besides the
Basilica of Santa Croce.
After this morning, it would be sunny sky for the rest of the trip.

Masterpieces all around
At the Piazza della Signoria, the political center of Florence, we looked up at the sculptures on display under the Loggia dei Lanzi.
A replica of Michelangelo's David is also in this square. Later this morning, we saw the original David in the Accademia delle Belle Arti.

Local Souvenir
In southern Italy, lemon is a major theme of souvenir.
To navigate the zigzag curves of this coastal highway, we exchanged our large tour-bus for two smaller ones.
08-JUN-2011
Amalfi Miniature
We saw quite a few miniature villages by the side of highways in this region. This is the only one we could walk up to and appreciate its details.

Fountain of Pompeii
Roman aqueducts brought water to Pompeii for public use at many fountains. This one on Via dell’ Abbondanza is decorated with a relief of the head of Fortuna and her horn of plenty.
Along this street is the side of Eumachia’s Building. Continuing down the street brought us to the forum and the front of the building.

Pompeii Market Place
We enter the market (Macellum) of Pompeii from the
Forum here.
Item sold here, including fish, meat and bread were painted on the wall above us.

Pompeii Public Bath
The public bath in Pompeii is the best preserved Roman bath in the world.

frigidarium.

Andiamo!

At the Marina Grande, while Freddy, our tour director was still counting, Sophia, our enthusiastic local guide waved us forward towards our buses.
“Andiamo” means “let’s go” in Italian. The first time I heard it, I thought she was calling someone “auntie 阿母”.

The Rise of the Roman Empire
The maps on this wall show how Rome rose from a single city to a vast empire completely engulfing the Mediterranean Sea.

We can keep our ticket stubs as souvenir.
10-JUN-2011
World’s Most Famous Ceiling
At the Cortile del Belvedere, our guide pointed out interested facts about Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco. Since speaking aloud inside the Sistine Chapel is prohibited, the Vatican Museum set up quite a few such displays in this outdoor courtyard for tour groups.
Photography is strictly forbidden inside the chapel, I have to settle for taking photographs of other ceiling paintings along the way.

So Many Art Works, So Little Time
The Gallery of the Candelabra in the Vatican Museum was packed with more statues than we could appreciate. It held even more tourists.
10-JUN-2011
Short Cut to St. Peter's Basilica
We immerged from the Sistine Chapel to the north side of St. Peter’s Basilica with its dome way above us. This area was dedicated in 2008 as the Patio of St Gregory the Illuminator, after the Armenian Patriarch.
Because we already passed through security prior to entering the Vatican Museum, we could skip the long line and enter St. Peter’s directly from its
portico.
Two of the four statues in niches can be seen under the portico. Here is
one of them.
