Before St. Vitus’ 19th century completion, this gate on the south side was the main entrance to the cathedral.
Above it, the mosaic The Last Judgment from 1371 depicts Christ in the center worshiped by 6 Czech saints with heaven and hell on the sides. Besides the center arch is Emperor Charles IV, who commissioned this mosaic. It was made with one million pieces of glass pebbles in 31 different shades. Its gilded background gave it the name "Golden Portal". Its brilliant color was restored by the Getty Conservation Institute.
