In front of the Basilica of Santa Croce is a statue of Florentine native son Dante Alighieri (1265 - 1321), who was exiled from Florence and took refuge in Verona.
The statue was sculpted by Enrico Pazzi in 1865 on the poet's 600th birthday. Dante is portraited here with laurel wreath of the poet laureate on his head.
