Thousand Islands is a group of scenic islands, straddling the U.S.-Canada border, on the St. Lawrence River.
We took a boat tour from Rockport on the Canadian side.
The Boldt Castle is the highlight of the tour. In 1900, George Boldt, owner of the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel and manager of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, started building a huge private home on the 5-arce Heart Island as a gift to his wife, Louise. In 1904, construction was abruptly halted at the sudden death of his wife at age 41. The almost completed mansion was left unoccupied until its acquisition by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority in 1977. It is now a major tourist attraction.
