It is the largest Woodpecker in the OLD WORLD....the Americas is known as the NEW WORLD and there are larger specimen to be found there.

The Great Slaty started showing up in Cheow Lan Reservoir in Khao Sok National Park a few years ago. It's pretty easy to see now, that is, if you know where to look. I don't know if it's territorial or not, but there are a couple of spots where it can be seen on a regular basis.
The only other place I've seen them is on Ko Tarutao Marine National Park.
I didn't realize that it's the biggest woodpecker in the whole world.
