Picketwire Canyon

Picketwire Canyon is a not a very well known or a very accessible place. It is located within the Comanche National Grassland, in the south/east part of the state away from the mountains. The closest town is La Junta.

To get there you have to drive on a bumpy dirt pack road and then hike. We have done about 12 miles round trip hike. About 6 miles from the trailhead the trail crosses the river. There is no bridge so you have to get your feet wet, but after you do, you will see amazingly preserved tacks left by dinosaurs some 150 million years ago.

On the way to this place, you also pass through remnants of old settlement (Spanish mission and cemetery). I am not showing any pictures of that part of the trip.

Why picketwire? The river that made the canyon is the Purgatoire (and not Purgatory) River. It is also known locally as the Picketwire River. How did the PUR-GUH-TWAHR became Picket Wire? The official story is that it is a mispronounced version of the French name. I think there is more to it. I could understand not wanting to call this beautiful place a purgatory, especially if it was my home.

[PL] Picketwire Canyon to malo znane miejsce w polodniowo-wschodnim Colorado.

Ubita polna (wyboista) droga prowadzi to szlaku.
