The Castle is one of the mightiest fortresses in western Europe, it guards the English end of the shortest sea crossing to the Continenet. There has been a castle here since November 1066 when that month Duke William of Normandy's forces constructed the first earthwork castle before continuing to London. The castle retained a garrison until October 1958, a span of 892 years that is only equalled by the Tower of London and Windsor Castle. The Castle was modernised and its defences extended in the 1750's and again during the Napoleonic Wars.
