Here is a 21 hour old Moon setting over a neighbor's house. This is an "enhanced" image where I used Photoshop to remove the foreground electrical wires. The thin crescent is sunlight reflected off the moon. The rest of the Moon is actually from "Earth shine" which is sunlight reflected off of the Earth which illuminates the Moon. This sunlight has actually traveled from the the Sun to the Earth to the Moon and back to the Earth, which is roughly 500,000 miles further than just going from the Sun to the Earth. And it takes about 2 2/3 seconds for the Sun's light to make that extra journey. The last image in this series is what the original shot looked like.
