The interior of the Women's Sewing Cooperative at Nueva Vida, near Managua. This was the world's first worker-owned Free Trade Zone; with the help of the Center for Development in Central America, the women constructed the building themselves and met requirements to compete as a Free Trade Zone. I understand this is the only clothing exported from Nicaragua that does not come from a "maquila" or foreign-owned sweatshop. Organic cotton clothing is marketed by Maggie's Organics; orders for college logowear are increasing.
