The centre of the town appeared poorer, hotter and more chaotic than Nairobi. Away from the beach I did not see any whites. People had thin, Cushitic features and pale brown skin. Many women wore the black hijab. I stopped at a stand to buy a bottle of sparkling water. The stand was painted bright green and appeared to sell every type of telephone card. The woman behind the counter was toothless.
