"What mosque?"
Effie stopped walking and I bumped into her.
The children jostled around us with hopeful eyes, as we stood still on the street corner. "That's the Khoja Mosque." A gesture with her thumb. "If it looks like just another colonial office building, there's a reason. Your people couldn't stop the Muslims from building a mosque but you didn't want the streets of Nairobi spoiled by anything that could shock European sensibilities. " She snorted contemptuously, "The Ismaeli Muslims built it to look like a bank from this side of the street."
The building indeed resembled a bank in an English high street. For a moment I stared then Effie tugged me away and together we barged past the beggars.
