Khoja Mosque

"They come onto the streets when city police go off duty at four. They pretend to be Muslim and stand outside the mosque."
"What mosque?"
Effie stopped walking and I bumped into her.
The children jostled around us with hopeful eyes, as we stood still on the street corner. "That's the Khoja Mosque." A gesture with her thumb. "If it looks like just another colonial office building, there's a reason. Your people couldn't stop the Muslims from building a mosque but you didn't want the streets of Nairobi spoiled by anything that could shock European sensibilities. " She snorted contemptuously, "The Ismaeli Muslims built it to look like a bank from this side of the street."
The building indeed resembled a bank in an English high street. For a moment I stared then Effie tugged me away and together we barged past the beggars.
