Picture a Day FOR A YEAR

This gallery spans one year of my life, from May 22, 2003, to May 22, 2004. These pictures aren't a "Diary", but there is one picture taken by me during each day of this year as a photo challenge to myself. I've created a montage out of all these pictures, with each picture being 1.25 inches square, and the full montage being 20x30 inches.

Hi Max! May 15th wasn't a very good photo day and I was spending some time going through what I had for that day trying to figure out which would work best. I'll post something that I took on the 15th. I just had to struggle a bit to come up with which picture to use! :) I wouldn't miss a day though, certainly not after going this far without missing a day!

Paul my love. As a person who knows your true character, it's a pleasure to see that people all over the world feel they are getting to know you through your art. I've been with you on your frustrated picture days, but you always manage to squeeze things out that are breathtakingly beautiful. Your pictures have texture, taste, sound, emotion. Dear Paul First congratulations on reaching the million, a great achievement. I can see that it must be very difficult to produce photographs of your very high quality on a daily basis. Any reduction in quality would not be acceptable to you. There are no hard and fast rules about what we do, apart from honesty. I, for one see nothing wrong with putting up a photo when you can. We all know in what great esteem you and your work are held by people fortunate enough to find your galleries. Take the pressure off and perhaps inspiration will follow. You do us all good and we have so much to thank you for. I think I will take a photo of my big toe today!!!! Chris

Hi Keenan. My year of photography started on my birthday on May 22nd, so the new calendar year has nothing to do with my year of photography. Also, I always keep the most recent 30-40 pictures on the first screen of my Picture a Day gallery. I don't move them into the sub-folders until they are 30-40 days old. As each new month comes along, slowly but surly my oldest pictures will be moved into a folder for the previous month. Also, I almost always post multiple pictures a day that will be reduced to one picture after a few days of pondering which one looks best on my collage, and which one seems to be liked best by viewers.

Hi Mattias! That's actually a pretty good idea you have of creating a mosaic picture of myself with all the little square pictures I'm using for the montage. And if I include all the one's I've created that did NOT make it to be the picture for that day also, I end up with quite a few photos! I will definitely see what I can do with that at the end of my year of pictures! :)

Hey there, nice to see that you're still going strong here. Probably you've already thought of it, but I'll say it anyway. When your next birthday is coming up and you've got all your photos, you should take a photo of yourself and use the other photos to make a mosaic picture. It might be cool, you should at least try it... I think :)

things are pretty rough where you live (LA), because of the fires, we had the same problem this summer here but we are a very tiny country, 400.000 Ha burn down just this summer in portugal, i hope things there get better, best regards joao

So your galleries, far to many good ones to name and spent the best part of half an hour clicking through the 'thumbs' that caught my attention (well I am on a dial-up!!) Really excellent work. I suppose what really stands out is your people photography. 09-13 for instance ... lovely portrait. Just keep up the good work.

We had worked together for a bit less than three years. The picture on August 8th with us both wearing life jackets (now in the Extras gallery - www.pbase.com/image/20262302) was on our cruise together. She's a good friend.

Ray Pettit: Without making SPECIAL efforts, my only photo opportunities are driving to work, working, driving home, and being home for a while before I sleep. I live a very drab life! This has forced me to take special "Photo Hunting" days now and then to keep the gallery from getting too tedious. Also as far as seasons go here in Los Angeles, California, there basically are none. There is no appreciable change throughout the year. So, I don't get the pleasure or difficulty of dealing with snow, etc. Just gloomy days, rainy days, and sunny days, all year long. Thanks for your comments! And if you start a "Picture a Day" gallery, let me know the site address so I can add it to my clickable lists!

Paul, I'd be interested to know how many diverse opportunities you get to photograph during a normal working day. I'd be interested in doing something similar here in the UK but I have a two mile drive to work, sit at a desk, and then go home. Yes, there's a lunch hour and our town centre is full of possibilities. Of course, at the moment its easier, but I'm wondering how I'd cope in February, but I know you're not there yet. I think that will be the real test for you. However, wintertime really creates opportunities and I don't mean snow, but the expressions of people trying to keep warm and/or dry. Rain does make a good picture if you know how, and I think that all these 'Picture-a-Day' people will learn a lot, especially as the seasons go round. You have inspired many people, Paul, and we must thank you for that. I may well follow your footsteps on my birthday as that's in January and I want to get February out of the way quick! Ray

Incredibly simple idea but at the same time SO ORIGINAL !!! That's why it's BIG ! You have my full support - don't you dare giving up. You HAVE TO hold on till the very end because your project is one of the best things I have seen recently. I think it's really great and it will take you far ! You'll see. Craig: Thanks for your compliments! I just do photography for fun, I'm not a Pro, though I do take it quite seriously. I just won't consider doing it for money. My line of work is technology, which pays the bills fine. My best camera at the moment is a Fuji S2 pro DSLR. I also use my little Nikon Coolpix 5000 for some pictures. I'm going on a very short cruise from L.A. to Ensenada and back on the 8th of August. I'll see if they have any container ships at the port while I'm there. One way or the other, that's a nice suggestion and I'll try to get one sooner or later!

7-4-2003 is really a good picture. 7-12-2003 is way more than I can handle. You seem to have a very good balance between people, places and things. I see a lot of shots on Pbase of just nature or just people, but you are very well balanced. Also your camera work is very good. You must be a pro. What is your line of work? Are you in L.A.? I'd like to see a picture of a container ship in port in Long Beach or L.A. What is the best camera you have that you like to use? Anyway, thanks for the pictures. Craig_C

Paul Brennan: Well, actually... no one ever drives me around. So I have one hand for the steering, gas, and breaks (hand controls), and one hand for the camera. I've had to learn to take pictures without looking through the viewfinder sometime to avoid accidents. :)

Great gallery Paul. I just started one myself last week and am in my 8th day of doing it. The hardest thing I find is coming up with something different - it's a real challenge. But as I learn more about my camera and more about photography in general, I find that it has become a fun activity to do. Thanks for starting me off with the idea.

Paul, Interesting concept - one a day for a year. There is a lot of imagination in your shots. I particularly like the close-ups of 6/8, 6/7, 6/5, and 6/22, and the patterns of 6/9 and 6/30. Also the portrait of 6/14 is really striking; Trying more shots like that wouldn't hurt your portfolio at all. Keep up the good work.

However, keep in mind that I am not trying to create a Photo Diary with my images. The photos are not intended to represent my activities. They are more intended to be photographs than to sum up my day. It IS difficult to take a photo a day to show what you've been up to, and it seems ridiculous at times to photograph something you repetitively do - at work, for example. But keep it up! I'm on the edge of entering my 7th month, now, and although it's challenging, it is also fun, and (hopefully) improving my own photography!

Yes Paul, you're right. I already did a picture like the "Knees and Miniskirt", however, I kept the burning car on the freeway for that day instead (06/16/03). Since I liked the "Knees and Miniskirt" picture, I decided to do it again today! :) I'll try to avoid repeating pictures that I actually choose as the one picture for the day, but I'm sure I'll reuse ideas that didn't quite make it as the one picture in the past. :)

Hey Teski and Thanh, I'd love to see both of you do something like this! However, it IS a pain in the butt! And I'm sure I'll think that even more by the time I take picture #275 and still have almost 100 to go! My goal is to make a 20"x30" picture printed on photo paper with all these images on it once I'm done. As I'm going, each of my images are 1.25"x1.25" @ 300 dpi. The 20x30 fits 16 across each row. I have two rows of 8 squares in the middle of the picture that I'm using for the "Title", since otherwise the count doesn't work right. I end up filling all the squares up two days after my birthday next year. So it works out okay. Anyway, if any of you start something like this, I'd love to see it!

Mattias: The reason some days have more than one image is because it's a new day and I haven't yet decided which image to keep for the day. Obviously I take multiple pictures every day for this, and on good days, or really bad days, I often post several to see which are most interesting to people so as to help me eliminate the less interesting pictures. :) I haven't given up yet!

I think that a "photo diary" is a great idea! I decided to do just the same at the beginning of the year, and it really DOES make you see the world in a different light: I have started to see things as being more surreal, or as "snapshots", or as part of an image, not just the whole picture. I really love the photo of the cat and frog, it's wonderfully eye-catching, and I would love to know how you achieved it (I doubt that you dyed a cat blue for the shot!!). Anyway, keep it up, my gallery isn't anywhere near as creative as yours, but I will pop back and look at your gallery now and again to see how you're getting on! Nikki H.

And I'm sure the further I get into this the LESS I'm going to like trying to come up with a new photo that isn't just a picture as I drive to and from work each day. But, this is the project, and we'll see how long I go before I get tired of it and quit. :) Oh, and it's not really meant to be interesting to anyone but me, so I understand if anyone looking at this gallery might wonder what the purpose is.
